NATASHA ROMANOFF

33, scorpio, intj. natasha was raised in the soviet assassin school for wayward girls known as the red room. she ❝ graduated ❞ at the top of her class, working at first as an assassin/spy for the kgb, and then later as a mercenary for hire. targeted by the strategic homeland intervention enforcement logistics division (aka shield), natasha's life was spared by agent clint barton, who defied his orders to kill on sight and brought her in to become an agent of shield. she subsequently became a member of shield's strike tactical ops division, forming team delta with barton. she also participated in undercover work, most notably to assist tony stark (aka iron man) with his palladium poisoning. natasha would also participate in 'the battle for manhattan', officially joining nick fury's roster of avengers. later, she would become partner to steve rogers (aka captain america), and aided him in the destruction of shield, which had been revealed to have been slowly eaten away at from within by the fascist organization known as hydra. natasha wikileaked encrypted files onto the internet, destroying a large portion of her cover stories and releasing her past out to the section of the world with the ability to decrypt secret government organization files (akin to the panama papers). she joined the avengers once more to destroy tony stark's world destroying robot known as ultron, and tried to start a relationship with bruce banner (aka the incredible hulk), but after rescuing natasha from being killed by ultron, the hulk took off into space, leaving natasha behind. the team then began training new avengers — wanda maximoff, (aka scarlet witch), sam wilson (aka falcon), james rhodes (aka war machine) and vision (aka vision). a routine mission for them goes awry when wanda, in an attempt to save steve's life, blows up a building in the city of lagos, accidentally killing the people inside. the avengers are split in two. natasha joins tony's side, feeling that having some control is better than no control. however, when the accords tony's side follows threatens steve's life, she defects, allowing steve and his friend bucky barnes (aka the winter soldier) to escape. branded a traitor, natasha joins forces with steve and sam, dying her hair blonde and going undercover as the secret avengers.

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: It depends on who you are, honestly. Natasha's receptive to intimate physical affection, but you need to be a level 10 friend to unlock her tragic backstory first. Casual physical affection (hugs, handshakes, etc) are fine, though.

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Natasha punches aliens and Nazis for a living, come at her bro.

ROMANCE/FLIRTING/SEX: Natasha also flirts to get people off their guard for a living — it's not likely to be serious, however.

PSYCHIC ABILITIES: wanda, no

MAGIC/POWERS: She's dealt with them before. Talk to me before hand, so we can figure out how it's gonna go.

MEDICAL INFORMATION: Physically fit, with the strength/stamina/flexibility of your average Olympic level gymnast, or your average ballet dancer.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS OR TRIGGERS: She's a superhero, so being a Bad Guy(tm) will set her off. Otherwise, she's not really that easy to trigger — it generally takes actual psychic manipulation to do so.

⇓out of character⇓

BACKTAGGING: Essential. I don't currently have internet set up at my apartment and it's TBA when I'll be able to do so. Thus, lots and lots of phone tagging and hanging out at Starbucks on my days off. If you ever want to wrap a thread up quicker than I'm able to get to it, let me know and we can absolutely handwave it out.

FOURTH WALLING: Within the realm of the game mechanics is fine. Outside of that, I'd like to avoid any direct references to the films she's been in or her history with the Red Room. Mentioning the comics is okay — she's just gonna think you're weird.

THREADHOPPING: Ask me first, but I'm usually okay with it.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS/TRIGGERS: Basic human decency offenses (ie: Nazis, rape, etc) go here. Please warn me for parental death, eye trauma, mouth trauma (including teeth trauma), and extreme body horror/gore. I'm not necessarily triggered by these things, but I do prefer a head's up so I can prepare myself.

ANYTHING ELSE: Natasha's past contains elements of forced medical procedures causing trauma, murder, insinuated brainwashing, and extreme cases of violence and child abuse. If you would prefer I didn't tag you with anything related to these things, shoot me a PM and I will honor the request.

IN CHARACTER

Character Name: Natasha Romanoff
Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Canon Point: Post the events of Avengers: Infinity War

In-Game Tattoo Placement: On her torso, next to/under her left breast.
Current Health/Status: Alive!
Apparent Age: 33
Actual Age: 33
Species: Human

History: World History, Personal history; spoilers for Infinity War in both links!
Hometown/World: Earth. Ostensibly, Natasha is from Volgograd (or Stalingrad), Russia, but she’s defected and now runs all over the planet with a bearded sad man and a bearded bird man. Technically, she’s homeless.

Personality: Natasha is a spy, not a soldier, crafted in the heart of Russia to have a very specific skill set. It’s hard to see that looking at her. She is, after all, the legendary Black Widow. Her job requires her to constantly be on the move, one step ahead of everyone else, planning and pretending. As a shadow-slash-spy-slash-assassin, she's required to be someone she's not on a regular basis. As a result, most of the people she comes across only get to see what she puts out, which is that mysterious aura of ‘who is this woman?’. She tends to compartmentalize her emotions, because of this. It's easy for her to box up how she feels about something and ignore it for the sake of her sanity or the mission. It's not always foolproof, though; if you had two tons of giant green rage monster barrelling down on you, you'd probably wet your pants and scream. Natasha doesn't. Oh, she's frightened, and it very clearly shows. But she doesn't let that fear consume her. She stands back up and gets the job done because that’s what needs to be done. Loki even tries to upset her, using past deeds revealed to him by Clint. It works, sort of. Natasha allows him to see her get upset to the point of tears, but it’s only a ruse (or so Loki thinks). She shuts off that pain and guilt, smiling sweetly at Loki and thanking him for his cooperation. Mining her vulnerability is a weapon Natasha uses as much as the Widow Stings on her wrists.

The past happened. Now she tries to make up for it. She earned the name Black Widow over the years, lending her skill set to the highest bidder. Lies, murder and betrayal were just part of the job, and for a while, Natasha herself though she was unsavable. These are past sins that she wishes to atone for. She keeps a ledger, a system of checks and balances, and it’s bleeding red, and Natasha would probably be the first to say that her hands are covered in blood as well. Her sins of the past are constantly weighing on her mind, and Natasha is the kind of person who, while she does not regret the choices she has made, because they have brought her to where she is today, she knows that in making those choices she has wronged people. Maybe she can’t set it right with them, exactly. But she can do other things to regain that sort of karmic balance. (Although she herself would not use the word karma, likely. If brought up at all, Natasha uses the ledger analogy, for the universal symbolism of it.)

Her life consists of checks and balances, now. It’s not something she’s willing to let go of lightly. Natasha's worked hard to cultivate a sense of self that did good, and it was ripped away from her - she struggles with doing what she can to keep it from being taken, but in the end, even though she did the right thing, the Avengers were disbanded and she was considered a fugitive. She doesn’t regret it, but to have what she’s worked so hard to build just stripped from her is a difficult pill to swallow. She's spent a lot of her life hiding who she is; returning to that is easy, if heartbreaking. Even people who seem to think they know the Black Widow don't really know her, passing her off as just another pretty face when that's what she's wanted all along. Her reputation precedes her, but that’s all it is. ‘The infamous Black Widow’, she’s called by a Russian black market arms dealer. He expresses disappointment when she’s not up to snuff. He’s proven wrong (rather violently) later. She likes it this way. It means no one knows what to expect from her, and she’s able to use the greatest weapon in her arsenal: herself. The mission always, always, comes first. Natasha will absolutely break cover when the shit hits the fan. It’s difficult to say if she loves her job. She certainly doesn’t dislike it, considering the amount of effort she puts into it. Natasha was one of the Agents Fury could trust to get the job done no matter what, and Natasha would probably agree with this. Loyalty, as a concept for Natasha, is an interesting thing. She’s a spy, and so she has to live in a world where she must be duplicitous at all times. This results in people not being certain of her, when she herself is certain of them. This works out fine when on an undercover mission, but when it comes to her personal life, it’s a little trickier to navigate. Natasha has very few people she considers friends, and even fewer she trusts with her life. She trusts Clint Barton because he gave her a second chance. She trusts Steve Rogers because he has twice now proven his worthiness to her, once when punching aliens in the face and again when taking down HYDRA. In essence, the quickest way to earn Natasha’s trust and loyalty is to trust her yourself. She doesn’t have that many people who do, and she knows this. She also knows that maybe she’s not worthy of it, and so she clings to those who trust her, which is why it hurts so much when she finds out they don’t. With that said, Natasha doesn’t expect your trust and loyalty. She knows how the spy game is played. She doesn’t have some naive ideal that everyone will be friends and holds hands. She knows backstabbing, literal and figurative, is a part of it. It’s as ingrained and as natural to her as breathing. When she's not on a mission, Natasha is sensible, down to earth and unafraid of banter (although she’s not exactly afraid of banter on a mission, either). She's a voice of reason among her teammates, and more often than not, she's the one keeping a cool head under pressure. She's quite observant, too, able to deduce even minute personality quirks after spending a short amount of time with someone, and file those away for further study. Her loyalty to her team, and to the man she feels helped her when no one else would, comes before all. She has her own way of doing things, a moral compass that might seem a little bit skewed to observers. She lives among shades of grey, and that’s how she views the world.

She has a sarcastic witty side, and she can be quite stubborn when pressed to do something that she doesn't want to do. Natasha’s not afraid to express her displeasure, whether vocally or through expression, when she hears or sees something she doesn’t like. Her relationship with her colleagues means that she can speak up when something’s bothering her with little fear of repercussion; she’s not afraid to tell Steve that she thinks the Accords aren’t a bad idea, and she’s not afraid to tell Tony later that they failed. Natasha is never afraid to do the right thing, even if the right thing isn’t very nice. In Fury’s own words, “Romanoff is okay with everything.” Obviously, this is proven not quite true, but out of everyone Natasha’s worked with, she’s got the most morally dubious compass. She has no problem doing the things that other people won’t do, because she knows they need to be done. After all, if anyone is going to do it, it might as well be her. She’s been getting her hands dirty since she was a child, and while she’s on a mission to atone, she’s sure of one thing: if she does the dirty jobs that no one else will do in the name of good then she’s working towards that atonement. Part of that is accepting the Accords. Natasha doesn’t play along with Ross because she thinks the man is right - but she does believe that the Avengers need to be accountable, and that the best way to do that while still maintaining their freedom is to do what they’re told. At least that way they have one hand on the wheel, still.

The spy world may not be the most comfortable of jobs, and it’s kind of lonely, if you really sit down and think about it. Becoming an assassin-slash-spy for hire probably wasn’t the best life choice, but it was hers. Choice and control are huge for Natasha, and she is adamant about keeping it that way. The unknown is her greatest fear. If she can’t analyze it, use her weapons (physical and mental) against it or kill it, then she doesn’t know what to do. Her skill set is what she has and what she knows, and she’s alright with that. Because she’s chose that. Yes, she may have chosen it during a tumultuous period in her life. But even now she doesn’t regret the fact she made that decision, even if she regrets the things she did after she made it.

Not regretting doesn’t mean not wanting to move on, though. In trying to find herself after the fall of Hydra, Natasha briefly considered retiring from the spy world and settling down, pursuing a relationship with Bruce Banner as a result. She knows she can’t get away, though, because deep down, Natasha is the kind of person who will do the right thing in the end, and for her, running away when people need help isn’t the right thing. Twice she’s offered the chance to run away, and twice Natasha chooses not to go, instead throwing herself into Avengering.

For her, being a normal person can never truly be an option. Her past, including the time she spent in the Red Room (the Soviet training ground where they raised her into a killer), means that leaving the dark underworld of spycraft and superheroing isn’t something she can do easily, if at all. Being a hero isn’t something that comes easily to Natasha but it’s the best way, for now, to use her skills for good. Even if it’s without the backing of the Sokovia Accords. The two years she's spent on the run with Steve and Sam have given Natasha the desire and determination to be as strategic as possible and as in control as much as she can be, considering she's gone rogue. She doesn't have the safety net of the Avengers anymore, or the Sokovia Accords, and while there's been a time in her life when she never needed that, she's no longer that person. She's harder, now. Tougher. It's still not enough to prepare her for the violence Thanos brings, and Natasha's found herself on a precipice of despair she's never been on before.
Personal Moral Codes: Natasha’s moral code sticks firmly in the middle of the black/white gradient of personal moral codes. Once described as having her ‘moral code’ for sale, even her own boss once mentioned that Natasha was ‘comfortable with everything’. While not necessarily true, Natasha is more likely to, say, be the one to kick someone off a building than any of her superhero peers. Natasha’s the kind of person who is willing to get her hands bloody to do the right thing.
  • She’s perfectly willing to kill if she has to. (“We don’t want to kill you. But we will.”)
  • She has no qualms about torture, if it’s for the right reasons. (“You’re right, it’s not. It’s hers.”)

Insecurities/Personal Demons:
  • Natasha worries that despite everything she’s done to try and pay off her personal, bloody, debt, that it won’t ever be enough.
  • Her past raised her to be a killer. There’s a part of her that feels like this means she’s not worthy of being anything but that.
  • Doing the right thing is important. Doing the right thing in the service of liars and killers is fine. The issue is when you can’t tell the good liars and killers from the bad ones. Since the fall of Hydra, Natasha’s doubted her ability to do so.
  • Natasha absolutely feels that she’s destined to belong nowhere, and to be alone.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses: Super Spy: Natasha is a skilled spy, trained in espionage tactics, covert ops tactics, black ops tactics and basic survival tactics. She’s also capable of suppressing her true body language and mannerisms in order to go undercover without detection. In addition, Natasha is capable of hacking into networks, files, databases and other such technological things, although she’s not as skilled as she’d like to be.

Master Assassin: She has a very specific skill set. Natasha is a master martial artist, likely trained in Soviet martial arts as well as others and has adapted to a fighting style uniquely her own. While not as skilled as other members of her former team, The Avengers, Natasha is a very good markswoman, even when dual wielding pistols.

Ability/Power/Magic Warping: N/A, Natasha’s totally human.

abilities

Super Spy: Natasha is a skilled spy, trained in espionage tactics, covert ops tactics, black ops tactics and basic survival tactics.

Black Widow: As the Black Widow, Natasha wears a catsuit-esque military style one piece uniform in different shades of black — a suit she absconded with after 'betraying' the Sokovia Accords. The suit zips in the front, and comes with knee and elbow pads to reduce the shock to Natasha's joints as she lands hits or lands jumps. With the suit, she wears knee high boots and black leather fingerless gloves. Covering her chest is a dark, army green, tac vest, with armor that covers her shoulders and upper arm areas. At her back is a hoslter, where she keeps her new batons — that can attach together at the ends to form a long polearm. Around her waist and thighs she wairs a dual-thigh holster, with a pair of electric taser disc shooters. The most important part of Natasha's Black Widow suit are the attached gauntlets, referred to as either the Black Widow's Bite or the Black Widow's Sting, depending on how Natasha's feeling that day. These gauntlets act as a both a close contact and ranged taser, able to fire bursts of electrical discharge at an enemy by aiming her wrist. Natasha can, and does, remove the gauntlets for use under civilian clothing, should she need to be undercover for part of a mission. When in use, the tips of the gauntlet towards Natasha's wrist glow bright electric blue; since her defection from the Sokovia Accords, the gauntlets no longer work.

first impressions

FASHION Natasha's sense of style is pretty minimalist; she tends towards leather jackets, polished cotton jeans, and tank tops, paired off with tall heeled boots. Her clothes tend to be things she can move around easily in, and she prefers neutral colors over anything overtly bright, or anything with noticeable patterns. She keeps her hair long and loose, and her makeup is a lot like her clothes: simple, with neutral colors. Natasha isn't a flashy person, and doesn't like to stand out, a product of her upbringing and her job requirements. She has two scars, neither of which are normally visible: one bullet wound on her left hip, and one bullet wound in her left shoulder, both entry and exit.

VISUAL Natasha is a pro at hiding her body language; generally speaking, just because she's presenting one way doesn't mean she's feeling that way. She can go from being Tony Stark's sexy PA to taking down his chauffeur in the middle of a boxing ring with no one realizing it's about to happen until it's too late. If something seems off about Natasha, it's not only because it is, but it's also because she's letting it happen. All of this said, if you're someone she knows and trusts, it's pretty safe to assume if she's acting one way around you, that's what she means.

AURAL Natasha is a mid-alto, with an almost husky aspect to it. She tends to speak common American English, with no accent, and is fluent in several languages including Russian, Japanese, Latin, German and French, all of which she speaks with generic, run of the mill, normal accents for that language.

OLFACTORY Natasha uses a rosemary/mint scented shampoo, and whatever nice smelling body wash she can find. She likes heavier scents, like patchouli, musk and sandalwood, and gravitates towards perfumes and soaps that have those scents in them. Poetically speaking, she smells like blood, ash and smoke.
